Walk onto our floor in Bellville and you'll see both answers side by side: brand-new off-road caravans built to your spec, and dealer-inspected pre-owned vans at sometimes half the price. We sell both, so we have no horse in this race — here's the honest way to choose.
The maths first
On our current floor, new off-road caravans run roughly R343,850 (Metalian M42) to R750,000 (Nayela Mahem). Pre-owned units run R204,900 to R699,900 — typically 20–40% below their new equivalent, with the first owner having absorbed the steepest depreciation. Quality off-road vans are built on galvanised chassis with moulded bodies precisely so they outlast their first owner; a well-kept 3-year-old van has most of its life ahead of it.
When NEW wins
- You want it exactly your way — layout, colour, options, power system specced from the factory. Browse the new range.
- Warranty cover matters to you — factory backing on body, chassis and appliances.
- Latest systems — lithium batteries, Victron charging, electric roofs and modern insulation are standard on current models.
- You're keeping it 10+ years — the new premium amortises away, and you know every kilometre of its history.
When USED wins
- Value — the same van, a few seasons old, for hundreds of thousands less. See current pre-owned stock.
- You get it NOW — no factory lead time; view it today, tow it this weekend.
- First caravan — learn what you actually need before you spec a new one. Many of our new-van buyers started with a pre-owned unit and traded up.
- Extras included — used vans often come loaded with the awnings, solar and kit the first owner added, effectively free.
The thing that matters more than new vs used: WHO you buy from
A private used deal can be a bargain or a R400,000 mistake — there's no inspection, no recourse and no paperwork help. A dealer-inspected van closes that gap. At 4Matt every pre-owned unit is checked in our own workshop, sold with a Roadworthy Certificate on delivery, and backed by the same team that services it afterwards. Read our full guide to the best off-road caravans for SA conditions for what to look for in either case.
Finance, trade-ins and the upgrade ladder
Both paths finance the same way — we arrange it in-house on new and used alike, and trade-ins are welcome in both directions: trade your tent-trailer up to a pre-owned van, or your pre-owned van up to a new flagship. Selling outright instead? See Sell My Caravan.
Frequently asked questions
Can I finance a used off-road caravan?
Yes — finance works on dealer-sold pre-owned vans much like new ones, and we arrange it in-house on both.
Do used caravans come with any guarantee?
Every 4Matt pre-owned unit is workshop-inspected before sale and delivered with a Roadworthy Certificate — not an as-is private deal.
How much cheaper is used, really?
Typically 20–40% below new-equivalent pricing depending on age, condition and fitted extras — on a R700k-class van that's real money.
Can I view both in one visit?
Yes — new and pre-owned stand side by side on our Bellville floor. Book a showroom visit and compare them in person.
