A complete 200W folding solar kit: two 100W monocrystalline panels hinged into a suitcase, a waterproof 20A Voyager PWM charge controller already wired in, alligator clips for the battery and a padded canvas carry case. Unfold it, angle the kickstands at the sun, clip it onto the battery and you are charging.
Roof-mounted panels are permanently fixed to wherever you parked. On a hot Karoo afternoon the shade is under the trees and the sun is not, and a fixed array forces you to choose between the two. A suitcase solves that: park the caravan in the shade and walk the panels out into the sun on twenty metres of cable. It is also the honest answer for anyone who does not want to drill their roof. Nothing gets fixed, nothing leaks, and the kit moves between a trailer, a bakkie and a bush cottage as needed. The Voyager controller is already mounted on the back of the panel and pre-wired, so there is no fiddling with polarity or sizing a controller yourself. It is IP65 rated, which matters when the panel is standing out in the open and a Highveld thunderstorm arrives.
4Matt Campers is a Renogy dealer in Cape Town. We spend a lot of time explaining the difference between what a panel is rated at and what it actually delivers on a dusty gravel road in December, so ask us before you buy. If your loads are bigger than a fridge and some lights, we will say so. Browse the full range in solar panels and Renogy.
Nothing needs to be fitted, but a few things are worth knowing. The supplied lead is short by design; if you want to stand the panels well away from the caravan, add an extension cable rather than moving the battery. Set the controller to the correct battery type before the first charge, particularly if you are on lithium. If you already run an MPPT controller in the caravan, you can order the panel without a controller or simply leave the Voyager disconnected and feed the array into your existing unit, which will get you a little more yield on cold, bright mornings. Do not leave the panels standing unattended in strong wind; the kickstands are good but a gust across an open pan will still lift them. Keep the glass clean. Fine Karoo dust costs you more output than most people expect.
Store what you generate in a bank from lithium batteries, and turn it into 230V with a unit from inverters and inverter chargers. Extension leads, branch connectors, in-line fuses and adaptor kits are in electrical accessories, and if you would rather upgrade the regulator, look at solar charge controllers.
How much will it actually put into my battery in a day?
In good Highveld or Karoo summer sun, plan on around 1kWh a day if you angle the panels a couple of times. In winter Cape weather with cloud, expect meaningfully less. Rated wattage is a laboratory number, not a promise.
Can I use it with a lithium battery?
Yes. Set the Voyager controller to the lithium battery type before you connect it. If your lithium battery has a low-temperature charge cut-out, the BMS will handle that side.
Can I connect two suitcases together?
You can, but not into one 20A PWM controller at 12V without checking the current. The safer route is a branch connector into a larger MPPT controller. Ask us and we will size it.
Is the controller waterproof enough to leave outside?
It is IP65 rated and mounted on the back of the panel, so rain and dust are fine. Standing water is not. Do not lay the panel flat in a puddle.
What happens if part of the panel is shaded?
The bypass diodes in the junction boxes limit the damage, so a shaded corner reduces output rather than killing it. You will still get noticeably more out of it in clear sun.
