The Renogy 200W ShadowFlux is a rigid 12V roof-mount solar panel built around N-Type cells and Renogy's cell-level anti-shading circuitry. Where a conventional panel collapses the moment an aircon unit, aerial or thorn-tree branch throws a shadow across it, the ShadowFlux keeps working. It is the panel to fit when your caravan roof is busy and you cannot guarantee a clear, unshaded run of sun all day.

Why This Product

Anyone who has watched a solar controller on a caravan roof knows the frustration: the panel is in full sun at 10am, and by 11am the shadow of the aircon shroud or the awning rail has crept across two cells and the charge current has fallen off a cliff. That is not a fault, it is how ordinary panels are wired. A standard 200W panel has two bypass diodes, so shading a handful of cells can knock out a third or all of the module.

ShadowFlux changes the internal circuit. Renogy fits 28 bypass diodes instead of two, so current is routed around individual shaded cells rather than shutting down a whole string. In Renogy's own comparison testing, a 200W ShadowFlux panel still produced roughly 85% of its output with 10% of the panel shaded, where the traditional 200W panel it was tested against dropped to zero. The same design keeps heat out of the shaded cell, which is what causes hot spots and long-term damage on conventional modules.

For a South African caravanner that matters in three everyday situations: parking under a shade tree at a Karoo or bushveld camp, roof clutter throwing moving shadows, and dust or bird mess sitting on a couple of cells between washes. You also get the general N-Type advantages - better heat tolerance, which counts in a Kalahari summer, and better low-light performance early and late in the day.

Optional Fitment & Upgrade Notes

A solar panel never connects straight to a battery. This panel's 36.5 V open-circuit output must go through a charge controller sized for it, which then charges your 12V battery. An MPPT controller is the sensible choice here - at 31.3 V Vmp there is a real voltage gap to harvest, and an MPPT will convert that surplus voltage into extra charge current that a PWM controller simply throws away. Check that the controller's maximum PV input voltage comfortably exceeds 36.5 V, and remember that Voc rises in cold weather.

For mounting, Renogy Z-brackets are the standard fixed option; corner brackets suit a drill-free bonded installation on a fibreglass or aluminium roof, and tilt mounts help if you want to angle the panel in winter. Use proper double-insulated solar cable sized for the run, seal every roof penetration correctly, and fit a fuse or breaker between the controller and the battery. If you are running two panels, decide series or parallel based on your controller's input window - two of these in series gives 73 V Voc, which many 12V MPPT controllers will accept but some will not.

FAQ

Does the ShadowFlux really keep working in shade, or is that marketing?
It keeps working, within limits. The 28 bypass diodes route current around shaded cells, and Renogy's comparison test showed roughly 85% output with 10% of the panel shaded versus zero from the traditional panel tested alongside it. Output still falls as shading increases - it is not immune to shade, it just degrades gracefully instead of switching off.

Can I connect this panel directly to my battery?
No. Its open-circuit voltage is 36.5 V and it must run through a charge controller, which regulates the voltage and manages the charge profile for your battery chemistry. Connecting a panel straight to a battery will damage the battery.

MPPT or PWM controller?
MPPT. With a 31.3 V Vmp feeding a 12V battery there is a large voltage difference, and an MPPT controller converts that into additional charge current. A PWM controller would waste most of it.

Will it fit on my caravan roof?
It measures 1262 x 764 mm and weighs 10.81 kg, which is more compact than most 200W panels. Measure your clear roof area first, allowing for the bracket footprint and enough clearance to avoid resting the panel against hatches or the aircon shroud.

Can I run two of these together?
Yes. In parallel they stay at roughly 36.5 V Voc and double the current; in series they reach about 73 V Voc at the same current. Which one you choose depends on your charge controller's maximum PV input voltage and current ratings - send us your controller model and we will confirm.
