Short Product Summary

The Renogy 20A Portable Battery Charger is an automatic mains-powered charger for 12V lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO4) batteries. Plug it into a wall socket, clip the 12 AWG alligator leads onto the battery, and it charges at up to 20A to 14.6V, then monitors and maintains the battery at full charge on its own. A single LED tells you the charge state at a glance.

Why This Product

Most caravanners charge from the alternator and from solar, and both are excellent on the road. But when the van is standing at home between trips, or you have pulled into a park with power and want the bank full by morning, you need a proper lithium mains charger. An ordinary lead-acid charger will not bring a LiFePO4 battery to the right voltage, and many will not even start on a battery that has gone flat and tripped its BMS. This unit is built specifically for LiFePO4, includes lithium activation for a battery that has dropped low, and is small and light enough at 1.7 kg to live in a locker and travel with you.

Key Features

  • Purpose-built for LiFePO4 – charges to the correct 14.6V lithium profile rather than a lead-acid voltage that leaves the battery short.
  • 20A charge current – a meaningful overnight charge for a 100Ah to 200Ah house bank, not a trickle.
  • Lithium activation – will start on batteries down to 8V, so a bank that has gone flat and shut down can be brought back.
  • Fully automatic – monitors the battery and holds it at full charge, so you can leave it connected during storage.
  • Plug and play alligator clips – 1 m of 12 AWG cable with clips, no wiring or installation required.
  • LED charge status – a single clear indicator shows the connected battery's operating mode and condition.
  • Wide 100–240V AC input – runs happily off South African 230V mains and off generator or inverter supply.
  • 93% efficiency – less energy wasted as heat, which matters when you are charging off a small generator.
  • Built-in electronic protection – a 250V 10A fuse for overcurrent plus short-circuit protection.
  • Genuinely portable – 233 x 108 x 64 mm and 1.7 kg, so it stows in a small locker or tool box.

Ideal For

  • Caravans and campers with 12V lithium house batteries stored between trips
  • Topping up at a powered site or at home before departure
  • Reviving a lithium battery that has been drawn down and shut off by its BMS
  • Charging a spare or second lithium battery on the bench
  • Owners who want a mains charger to back up their solar and DC-DC setup

Optional Fitment & Upgrade Notes

  • This charger is designed for 12V LiFePO4 batteries only — it is not intended for AGM, gel or flooded lead-acid banks.
  • Check that your battery's BMS allows a 20A charge current; most 100Ah and larger LiFePO4 batteries do comfortably.
  • The alligator clips suit direct-to-terminal charging. For a permanently wired installation, an on-board charger or inverter-charger is the better choice.
  • Charge in a ventilated space and keep the unit off carpet or bedding so it can shed heat.
  • Pair it with a DC-DC charger for driving and a solar controller for camp, so the battery is covered on all three sources.

FAQ

Can I use this on my AGM or gel battery?
No. It is built for 12V lithium iron phosphate batteries and charges to 14.6V, which is a lithium voltage. Use a lead-acid specific charger for AGM, gel or flooded batteries.

My lithium battery has gone flat and will not wake up. Will this help?
It can. The charger will engage on batteries down to 8V and includes a lithium activation function, which is usually enough to bring a BMS back online.

How long will it take to charge a 100Ah battery?
At a full 20A, roughly five hours from empty in ideal conditions. Real-world time depends on how depleted the battery is and how the BMS tapers the final stage.

Can I leave it connected while the caravan is in storage?
Yes. It automatically monitors the battery and maintains it at full charge, which is exactly what you want during long standing periods.

Will it run off my generator or inverter?
Yes, provided the supply is stable 100–240V AC at 50/60Hz and can deliver the charger's 5A maximum input draw.
