A compact 24V 25Ah lithium iron phosphate battery from Renogy, giving roughly 640Wh of usable storage in a 6 kg case about the size of a shoebox. It is the neat way to build a small 24V house bank without stacking two 12V batteries in series and hoping they stay matched.
If you have decided to run a 24V system, the tidiest starting point is a battery that is already 24V. Wiring two 12V batteries in series works, but you double the connections, you have to keep the pair balanced, and one weak cell drags the whole string down. A single 24V block removes all of that. At 25Ah it is deliberately modest, which suits a light off-road trailer, a rooftop-tent vehicle or a small camper where the loads are a fridge, lights, water pump and charging, rather than air conditioning. LiFePO4 chemistry is the right call for South African touring. It tolerates the heat you get in the Karoo and the Kalahari far better than lead-acid, it does not sulphate if you leave it partly charged between trips, and you can use effectively all of the rated capacity instead of stopping at half.
4Matt Campers supports Renogy builds right across the Western Cape. We fit lithium banks into caravans and campers as a matter of course, so we can tell you honestly whether 25Ah at 24V is enough for the way you actually camp, or whether you should be looking at a larger block. Ask us before you buy. Have a look at the rest of the range in lithium batteries and Renogy.
Mount the battery on a flat, ventilated surface and strap it down properly. It is light, and a light battery moves further on corrugations than a heavy one. Torque the M8 terminal bolts to a firm, even setting and use correctly crimped ring lugs. Charging is where people get caught out: a 24V battery needs a 24V charge source. A standard 12V alternator will not charge it directly, so a DC-DC charger configured for a 24V output is the usual answer, or a 24V-capable MPPT controller from your solar array. Do not charge below freezing unless the battery is a self-heating model, and this one is not. If you plan to expand the bank later, buy identical batteries and add them at the same time rather than mixing an old block with a new one.
Feed it from our solar panels through a 24V-capable unit in solar charge controllers, and turn it into 230V with a matched unit from inverters and inverter chargers. Battery cable, lugs, fuses and terminal hardware are in electrical accessories.
How long will 25Ah at 24V run my fridge?
640Wh is roughly a day and a half for a typical 45L compressor fridge in mild weather, less in Kalahari heat. If the fridge is your only load and you have solar on the roof, it is comfortable. If you also want to run an inverter for a kettle, size up.
Can I charge it from my vehicle alternator?
Not directly. A 12V alternator cannot push charge into a 24V battery. You need a DC-DC charger with a 24V output, which also protects the alternator from being loaded flat out.
Can I wire two of these in series for 48V?
Check the datasheet and confirm with us first. Series configuration is not universally supported on every Renogy model and getting it wrong voids the BMS protection. Parallel expansion at 24V is the usual route.
What happens if I leave it standing over winter?
Unlike lead-acid, it will not sulphate. Store it around half charge in a cool place and it will be fine for months. Do not store it fully flat.
Is it safe to mount inside the living area?
LiFePO4 does not vent hydrogen the way flooded lead-acid does, so an internal mount is normal practice. Keep it dry, secured and away from direct heat sources.
