At 400W an MPPT charge controller is the sensible choice rather than a basic PWM unit, and it should be sized for the panel's short-circuit current with headroom. Extension leads matter more at this size: the whole benefit is placing the panel where the sun is, so budget for a good length of properly sized MC4 cable and accept that undersized wire will quietly cost you energy through voltage drop. Because a 400W suitcase is physically large when open, think about wind. On an exposed site a gust will move it, so peg or weight it. It is also a valuable item sitting in the open, so plan how you secure it when you leave camp, and always fold and stow it before driving gravel.

FAQ

Is 400W overkill for a weekend?
For a weekend with a small fridge, probably. It comes into its own on stays of several days or with a large battery bank and inverter use. If you mostly do short trips, the 100W or 300W suitcase may suit you better.

Do I need a charge controller?
Yes, unless one is included with your kit. Never wire panels directly to a battery. Ask us at time of order and we will confirm what is in the box.

How heavy is it to carry?
It is a lightweight design for its output, but 400W of panel is still a two-hand carry. Most people manage it comfortably on their own over short distances.

Can I use it with my roof panels at the same time?
Often yes, but it depends on your controller and how the arrays are wired. Send us your current configuration and we will advise rather than guess.

What happens in partial shade?
All solar suffers in shade, and a partly shaded panel can drop far more output than the shaded fraction suggests. That is exactly why being able to walk the panel into clear sun is so useful.
