The Renogy 400W Portable Solar Blanket is a flexible, fabric-backed folding array that delivers 400W of charging and then packs down flat enough to slide behind a seat or under a mattress. It is the option for people who want serious portable solar without carrying a rigid framed suitcase.
A solar blanket solves a storage problem. A rigid 400W suitcase is a large, hard object that needs a dedicated space and does not tolerate being leaned on. A blanket rolls or folds into a soft package, weighs less for the same output, and can be laid over a bonnet, a roof, a rock or the ground without needing a frame. For overlanders and anyone travelling with a full vehicle, that difference is decisive. The trade-off is honest: a blanket has no legs, so you angle it by propping or laying it, and it is a softer item that wants a bit more care about what it is dragged across. What you get in return is 400W of harvest from something that stows almost anywhere, which is exactly what long remote trips through the Kalahari, Namaqualand or up into Namibia demand.
4Matt Campers is a Renogy dealer in Cape Town. Blankets and rigid suitcases both have their place and we will tell you which one actually suits how you pack and travel. Come through to the showroom to handle one, or call us and we will size the blanket, controller and battery bank together.
Confirm with us at time of order whether a charge controller, carry bag and connecting leads are supplied with your unit, as blanket kits are configured differently depending on stock.
A charge controller is required between the blanket and the battery unless one is included, and at 400W an MPPT unit is the sensible choice. Because a blanket has no support legs, think about how you will angle it: a couple of guy lines, a folding chair, or simply laying it on a north-facing slope all work. Treat the surface with respect. Do not drag it across gravel, do not walk on it, and do not fold it hard along the same crease every time. Give yourself a decent MC4 extension so you can put the blanket in full sun while the vehicle sits in shade, and use properly sized cable so you are not losing output to voltage drop over the run.
Compare it with the rigid suitcases and fixed panels in our solar panels range, and choose a matched unit from our solar charge controllers collection. Store the energy in a bank from our lithium batteries range, add 230V with our inverters and inverter chargers, and find MC4 leads, branch connectors and fuses in our electrical accessories collection. The whole range sits in our Renogy collection.
Blanket or rigid suitcase?
Blanket if storage space and weight are your constraint. Rigid suitcase if you want built-in legs and a harder-wearing item you can set up and forget. Output at the same wattage is broadly comparable.
Do I need a charge controller?
Yes, unless one is supplied. Never connect a panel straight to a battery. Ask us at time of order and we will confirm what ships with it.
Can I leave it out overnight or in rain?
It is built for outdoor use, but a blanket lives longer if you fold and stow it when you are not harvesting, and it should always be packed away before driving.
Can I walk on it or drive over it?
No. Flexible panels tolerate folding but not point loads or abrasion. Keep it off sharp gravel and never stand on it.
Will it charge as fast as a 400W roof array?
Aimed properly at the sun it will often do better, because roof panels lie flat. Laid flat on the ground it will do worse. Placement is everything with portable solar.
