A matched pair of 8AWG tinned copper cables, 8ft (2.4 m) long, with 3/8 inch ring lugs on one end for the battery and bare stranded wire on the other to land straight into a charge controller terminal. Positive and negative, ready to fit.
The cable between your charge controller and your battery is the part of a solar system nobody photographs and everybody underestimates. Undersize it and you lose voltage across the run, which means the controller sees a lower battery voltage than is really there and stops charging early. You paid for the panels; there is no sense throwing away the yield in the last two metres. 8AWG is 8.37mm² of copper, rated to 55A under NEC guidance, which comfortably covers a Rover 30A or 40A, an Adventurer 30A or a Wanderer 30A controller. On a caravan where the controller sits near the battery box, 2.4 m is usually enough to route neatly rather than in a straight line. These are tinned copper rather than bare copper, which matters on the coast and matters anywhere a battery box gets damp. Bare copper goes green at the lug and resistance climbs; tinned copper does not.

Fit an in-line fuse or ANL fuse on the positive cable, as close to the battery terminal as you can get it. The fuse protects the cable, not the controller, so size it to the cable rather than to the panel array. Strip only as much insulation as the controller terminal needs and make sure every strand goes into the clamp; a few strands folded outside the terminal is how hot spots start. Torque the ring lug onto the battery stud properly and check it again after the first long gravel trip. If your run is longer than 2.4 m, or your controller is 60A rather than 30A, step up to the 4AWG version rather than joining two of these together.

Is 8AWG enough for my 40A controller?
For a 40A controller over 2.4 m, yes. For a 60A controller, no. Step up to 4AWG.
Can I shorten the cable?
Yes, cut from the bare end, not the lug end. Shorter is electrically better as long as it still routes safely.
Which end goes to the battery?
The ring lug end. The bare stranded end lands in the charge controller's battery terminals, which on Renogy controllers are marked with a battery icon.
Do I still need a fuse?
Yes. An ANL fuse on the positive lead near the battery is standard practice and protects the cable from a short.
Why tinned copper rather than plain copper?
Battery boxes get damp and coastal air is corrosive. Tinning stops the strands going green at the terminal, which is where resistance and heat build up.
