Why This Product

Two 100W flexible panels take up more roof space, need more cable and give you two bonding jobs instead of one. A single 200W laminate at 1605 x 748 mm covers the same ground more neatly and lands on the roof at 4.9 kg, which is roughly half what an equivalent framed glass panel weighs. On a Conqueror-style off-road trailer, a moulded pod camper or a fibreglass caravan roof with a pronounced crown, that combination of wattage, weight and conformability is hard to match.

Where this panel earns its keep over a cheaper flexible is the cell technology. It uses half-cut PERC cells with bypass diodes, which means a shadow from an aerial, an air-conditioner or a roof hatch knocks out less of the panel than it would on a conventional full-cell layout. That matters on a caravan roof, where something is almost always casting a shadow at some point in the day.

The honest caveats are the same as for any flexible panel. Bonded flat to the roof, it runs hotter than a rigid panel on 30 mm standoffs, and hot cells make fewer watts on a February afternoon in the Karoo. Flexible laminates also generally have a shorter service life than glass panels in aluminium frames. And how you stick it down decides whether it lasts: a continuous, full-surface bed of flexible MS polymer adhesive is the correct method, not dabs of silicone or a few strips of double-sided tape. If your roof is flat and unshaded and you do not mind drilling, a rigid panel remains the longer-lived option.

Optional Fitment & Upgrade Notes

  • Bonding: use a full-surface bed of flexible MS polymer adhesive across the whole back of the panel. Spot dabs leave voids that trap water and let the edges lift.
  • Surface prep: strip old sealant, wax and dirt, then clean and dry the roof properly. Nearly every flexible-panel failure starts as a preparation shortcut.
  • Heat management: a bonded panel has no airflow behind it, so expect real-world output below the 200W nameplate on a hot day. Avoid mounting it in a dead-air pocket or directly over a heat source.
  • Controller sizing: at 10.74 A short-circuit on a 12 V bank, a 20 A controller is the sensible minimum for a single panel. An MPPT unit will generally pull more out of the 20.1 V operating point than a PWM one.
  • Cable entry: fit a proper waterproof roof gland rather than sealing a bare hole.
  • Expansion: a second identical panel wired in parallel gives you 400W at the same voltage but doubles the current, so check that your controller and cable are rated for it.

FAQ

Will 200W run my caravan fridge?
It depends on the fridge and the season. A modern 12V compressor fridge is usually within reach of 200W in Western Cape summer sun, but winter days, cloud and shade cut that hard. Work out your daily watt-hour consumption, then size the battery bank first and the panel second.

What does half-cut cell technology actually do for me?
Splitting each cell in half halves the current through it, which lowers internal resistance and heat losses. Combined with bypass diodes it also means a shadow across part of the panel does not shut down the whole module the way it can on an older full-cell design.

Can I walk on it once it is bonded down?
No. Renogy advises against walking on flexible panels because your weight is concentrated on a small area and can crack the cells. Plan the roof layout so you still have a clear path.

Do I need an MPPT controller or will PWM do?
PWM will work, but at 20.1 V operating voltage into a 12 V battery a PWM controller throws away the difference. MPPT converts that excess voltage into extra charging current and typically returns meaningfully more energy per day, which matters more on a 200W panel than on a small one.

How does it compare to a rigid 200W panel?
The rigid panel is heavier, thicker, needs brackets and holes, and generally lasts longer because it runs cooler in a frame. This one is half the weight, sits flush, fits a curved roof and does not require you to drill. Pick based on your roof shape and weight budget, not on price alone.
