The Renogy CORE 12V 40A DC-DC Battery Charger with MPPT (RBC40D1S) is a two-in-one charger for caravans, camping trailers and campers. It charges your 12 V house battery from the tow vehicle's alternator at up to 40 A while you drive, and it has a built-in MPPT solar controller so the same unit charges from your roof panels when you are parked. Profiles are selectable for AGM, gel, flooded and LiFePO4 batteries.
A lithium house battery cannot be charged safely or fully straight off an alternator. Wired directly, the battery will draw everything the alternator can give and overheat it, while a modern smart alternator will drop its voltage the moment the starter battery is full and leave your house bank stuck well short of 100%. A DC-DC charger solves both problems by limiting the current the alternator has to supply and boosting the voltage to whatever the house battery actually needs.
What makes this unit worth the extra over a plain 40 A charger is the MPPT solar input in the same box. On a typical South African trip you alternate between the two: long gravel transits through the Karoo or up the West Coast where the alternator does the work, then two or three days sitting still at a camp where solar is all you have. Instead of a DC-DC charger and a separate solar controller, two sets of cable runs and two sets of fuses, you mount one unit and wire both sources into it. Note that it charges from one source at a time, not both simultaneously – the DC input takes priority by default, and you can set solar priority if you prefer.
4Matt Campers is a Renogy dealer in Cape Town, serving customers throughout the Western Cape and delivering across South Africa. We build and service caravan and camper electrical systems every week, so we can help you match panel wattage and array voltage to this controller, size your cable and fuses correctly, and decide whether 40 A or a larger unit suits your battery bank and your driving pattern. Talk to us before you order if you want it checked over.
Battery cable, solar cable, ring terminals, fuses and fuse holders are not supplied and are sized to your specific installation.
Finish the system with the right battery and array: browse our lithium batteries, solar charge controllers, solar panels and 12V electrical accessories, or see the full Renogy range.
Can it charge from the alternator and solar at the same time?
No. It charges from one source at a time. By default the DC input from the vehicle takes priority when the engine is running, and it switches back to solar when it is not. You can set solar priority on the unit if you prefer.
Do I still need a separate solar charge controller?
Not for an array within the 12–30 V input range – the MPPT controller is built in. If you are running a large, higher-voltage array, a separate controller alongside this unit may still make sense; ask us and we will work it out with you.
Will it work with a smart alternator?
Yes. It handles both traditional alternators at 13.2–16.0 V and smart Euro 6 alternators from 12 V, which is exactly the situation where a plain isolator or split-charge relay fails to charge your house battery.
Is 40 A too much for my vehicle's alternator?
For most modern bakkies and SUVs with a healthy alternator, no. If you tow with an older or small-engine vehicle, tell us what it is and we will advise whether to stay at 40 A or drop to a 20 A unit.
Can I mount it outside on the trailer drawbar?
No. IP31 protects against drips only, and a drawbar sees dust, gravel and standing water. Mount it in a sealed locker, canopy or interior cabinet with airflow around it.
