Why This Product

Not every caravan needs 400W on the roof. A lot of vans in the Western Cape sit for weeks between trips, and the battery slowly drains through the alarm, the gas detector, the radio memory and self-discharge. A 50W panel wired through a small charge controller keeps that battery topped up so it is ready when you are, instead of flat and sulphated by the time the December trip comes around. It is also the right size for a small pop-top, a bakkie canopy build or a roof already crowded with a hatch, aircon and an awning rail, where a 100W or 200W panel simply will not fit.

Because it is a rigid, framed, glass-fronted panel, it is designed to be bolted down permanently and left there. That is a different job to a folding suitcase panel you pack away after every trip, and it is the reason rigid panels stay the standard for roof-mounted caravan solar.

Optional Fitment & Upgrade Notes

  • A charge controller is not optional. A solar panel must never be wired straight to a battery. This panel needs a PWM or MPPT charge controller between it and the battery bank to regulate charging and protect the battery.
  • Controller sizing: at roughly 2.9 A short-circuit current, a small 10 A controller is comfortably sufficient for this panel on its own, with headroom if you add a second panel later.
  • Mounting: Z-brackets are the usual choice for a flat caravan roof. Tilt mounts help in winter when the sun sits low, but on a caravan roof most owners fix flat and accept the small loss for the sake of towing safely.
  • Wiring more panels: wiring panels in series raises voltage and suits MPPT controllers; wiring in parallel keeps voltage low and suits PWM. Mixing panels of different wattage or age in one string is best avoided.
  • Cable and sealing: use correctly sized twin solar cable, an in-line fuse at the battery end, and a proper sealed roof gland. Sikaflex-sealed brackets are standard practice on a caravan roof.

FAQ

How much will a 50W panel actually put into my battery in a day?
In good South African summer sun you can expect roughly 200-250 Wh a day, which is about 15-20 Ah at 12V. That is a maintenance and top-up figure, not enough to run a fridge continuously. In midwinter Cape weather, expect considerably less.

Can I connect it straight to my battery?
No. The open-circuit voltage is 22.3V, which is well above what a 12V battery will tolerate. You must fit a PWM or MPPT charge controller between the panel and the battery.

PWM or MPPT for a panel this size?
A basic PWM controller is perfectly adequate for a single 50W panel and keeps the cost sensible. If you plan to expand the array later, or wire panels in series, start with an MPPT controller instead.

Will it survive being towed on gravel?
Rigid panels are designed for permanent vehicle mounting and this one carries a 2400 Pa wind load rating with tempered glass. The weak point on gravel is almost always the mounting method, not the panel, so use proper brackets, correct fasteners and seal them well.

Can I add a second panel later?
Yes, provided your controller has the capacity. The cleanest approach is to add an identical panel and wire the pair to match your controller type. If you already know you want more power, it is usually cheaper to fit one 100W or 200W panel from the start than to chain small panels together.
