Why This Product

The everyday problem with roof-mounted solar is that the panel and the caravan have to be in the same place. On a hot Northern Cape afternoon you want the van under a tree and the panel out in the open, and a fixed panel simply cannot do both. A portable panel separates the two: park in the shade, walk the panel out into the sun on a 5 or 10 m extension lead, and reposition it two or three times a day to keep it square to the sun.

That flexibility is also why a portable panel can outperform its rating relative to a fixed one. A flat-mounted roof panel is at the wrong angle for most of the day. This one sits on three-position kickstands that set it between 40 and 60 degrees, so you can aim it properly morning and afternoon.

Optional Fitment & Upgrade Notes

How you connect this panel depends on what you are charging. Into a portable power station, the panel's solar leads go to the station's DC solar input - check that the station accepts at least 21.6 V and 11.3 A, and order the correct adaptor cable for its input socket, because they differ between brands. Into a 12V battery bank, the panel must go through a solar charge controller. It never connects straight to a battery: a panel left connected directly will overcharge and ruin the battery. A PWM controller will work at this panel's 18.8 V Vmp, but an MPPT controller will still return more charge, particularly in weak morning and late-afternoon light.

The one accessory almost everyone ends up buying is an extension lead - the whole point of a portable panel is putting it where the vehicle is not, and a 5 m or 10 m solar extension lead makes that practical. Ground stakes for the kickstands are worth adding if you camp anywhere windy. If you already have a caravan-mounted controller, we can supply a bulkhead-mounted solar inlet socket so you can plug the panel into the side of the van without running cable through a window.

FAQ

Does this panel come with a charge controller?
No. The panel is supplied on its own with its output lead and solar connectors. If you are charging a 12V battery you need a separate solar charge controller; if you are charging a portable power station, its built-in controller does the job.

Can I connect it straight to my caravan battery?
No. It must go through a charge controller. A panel wired directly to a battery has nothing regulating the voltage or ending the charge, and will damage the battery.

Will it charge my power station?
In most cases yes, provided the station's solar input accepts up to 21.6 V and 11.3 A. Send us your power station model and we will confirm the compatibility and the adaptor cable you need before you order.

How far from the caravan can I put it?
As far as your extension lead allows, within reason. The 14 AWG output lead keeps losses down, and a 5 to 10 m solar extension is normal. Longer runs mean more voltage drop, so step up the cable size if you want to go further.

Can I leave it out overnight or in the rain?
It is IP65 rated for dust and splashing water, so a light shower will not hurt it. We would still fold it away in heavy rain or strong wind, and peg the kickstands down whenever you leave it standing.
