The Renogy Pro 12V 200Ah Underseat Smart Lithium Battery is a low-profile LiFePO4 battery built to slide into the shallow spaces caravanners actually have: under a dinette seat, beneath a bed base, or into a slim underslung box. It adds Bluetooth monitoring and a self-heating function so the battery can still accept a charge when the temperature drops below freezing.
Battery space in a caravan is almost never a neat cube. The underseat form factor exists because the usable volume in a van is wide and flat, not tall, and a conventional upright 200Ah case simply will not go where you need it. Two hundred amp-hours is the sweet spot for most touring setups: it will carry a compressor fridge, lights, water pump, charging and a reasonable amount of inverter use through a night and a cloudy morning without anxiety. The self-heating function is the part people underestimate in South Africa. We think of the country as hot, but a winter night in the Karoo, the Drakensberg or the Eastern Cape highlands drops below zero regularly, and lithium cells must not be charged below freezing without damage. This battery warms itself before accepting charge instead of simply refusing.

Secure the battery properly. A 200Ah lithium battery is heavy, and on corrugated gravel an unrestrained battery becomes a projectile, so use a proper hold-down and mount it low and close to the axle line where possible. Fuse the positive lead as close to the terminal as practical and size the cable for the largest load you intend to run, which is usually the inverter rather than the fridge. If you are charging from the vehicle while driving, use a DC-DC charger rather than a simple split-charge relay, because a lithium battery will otherwise try to draw more current than your alternator wants to give. Batteries can be paralleled for more capacity, but do it with matched units, equal-length cables and a common busbar so the current shares evenly.

What does self-heating actually do?
Lithium iron phosphate cells are damaged if you charge them below freezing. Rather than simply blocking the charge, this battery uses power to warm the cells to a safe temperature first, then accepts the charge. It matters on cold winter mornings inland.
How is 200Ah of lithium different from 200Ah of lead-acid?
Usable capacity. With lead-acid you would typically only draw about half before you start shortening its life, so a 200Ah lead-acid bank behaves like roughly 100Ah. With LiFePO4 you can use most of it, and the voltage stays higher under load.
Will it fit under my dinette seat?

Do I need a special charger?
You need a charger with a lithium profile. A DC-DC charger for alternator charging and an MPPT controller set to a lithium profile for solar is the normal combination.
Can I connect two of these in parallel?
Yes, to increase capacity. Use matched batteries at a similar state of charge, equal-length cables and a proper busbar so they share current evenly.
